The Last Smile of Fall

It’s begun in earnest, the complaints that winter is kicking down the door of fall and marching in too quickly and much too boldly! Here in Middle Tennessee the temperatures are dropping to, or going below, 20 degrees tonight. Friends in Iowa and Pennsylvania have already experienced their first snow and many weather forecasters are predicting a long, cold, hard winter.

The past two days I’ve mowed grass and raked leaves wearing long pants, a jacket and fleece cap. It seems like yesterday I was working outside in shorts and a t-shirt under a blazing sun trying not to get too hot, now I’m trying to stay warm.

Transition of seasons always take me by surprise. I longed for the warmth of summer last winter and it seemed to take forever to come. When it finally arrived fall seemed so far off into the future and yet somehow it’s snuck up on me in the last few weeks.

I like the quote in the picture above from William Cullen Bryant. As I worked outside today I noted the coldness of the air and the bright warmth of the fading sun. The day made me smile but also gave me a sense of melancholy. A realization that snow, cold, ice, winter-tide is coming and I cannot stop it. The only thing I can do is make the choice to return the smile of the present fall or frown at the future winter.
