Lessons Learned?

A great quote from Saint Teresa which begs a couple of questions… The first is; “are we a blessing or a lesson?” We’d like to think of ourselves as blessings but chances are we could find more than a few people who think otherwise. Folks who struggle with us, our flaws, eccentricities, weaknesses and sin. Behind their polite smile is a silent sigh. We might be surprised at those who have learned valuable and difficult lessons by being our friends, co-workers, family members.

The second question; “are we learning the lessons others could teach us about the world and ourselves?” Earlier today I was thinking about someone I used to work with, struggled with, had a hard time dealing with and appreciating. Even now I can’t think of one thing I learned from this difficult person. It would be easy to blame them for my lack of growth, fault them for having nothing positive to give, but when I let go of my ego, set aside my own prejudices and stubbornness, I realize that if I didn’t learn anything it reveals more about me than them.

blessings,
