Trust and a Weiner Dog

image

Upstairs from the loft we’re staying in is a nervous, confused, scared, upset, little weiner dog. He/she is a weekend guest of the owners of the house and doesn’t seem happy about it. Each time I go upstairs it looks suspiciously at me, begins to growls and then loudly barks at me until I retreat from whence I came. I’ve tried talking to it, approaching it, doing whatever I can to make it feel more comfortable with me but no luck, just more barking.

I have encountered people like this in my life. Folks who are suspicious, angry, nervous, confused, scared by what they’ve experienced on their journey of life. Each time I approach them, attempt to help them, try to befriend them, they respond suspiciously, aggressively, or want nothing to do with me. The possibility of true connection and relationship is miniscule because they’ve lost their ability to trust.

Life can be difficult and painful. Loss and grief are common. What we must be careful to never lose is an open heart, a hopeful spirit, the ability to trust and to love.
