the Key

Earlier this afternoon I installed new deadbolts on our “new to us” home. It’s an old farm house on a pretty piece of country land. The elderly gentleman we bought it from couldn’t have been nicer and even made extra copies to the deadbolts he’d been using. I smiled when I received the freshly minted keys while thinking to myself; “thanks, but how many keys have been given to family members and friends over the years?” A “new to us house” means new locks on the doors, new keys in our pockets. I hope we use them both countless times over the coming years. The keys will be symbols of home we carry around with us. As I was putting the new locks in I thought about the retiree who once occupied this home, used these doors. The locks and keys worked well for him and his family but we needed our own, unique ones.

There are doors each of us must open, walk through, if we’re to grow in wisdom, to understand what it means to have this gift called life. However, the keys to these common doors are unique to each person. No else can open the door to who we were born to become. Only we can decide to unlock the door, walk through and discover ourselves.

blessings,
