Being Heard

I spent most of the day attending several meetings in Nashville, TN. In one of them “volunteers” were asked to come to the front of the room, given a piece of paper, told to close their eyes and follow the leader’s instructions. I was one of the lucky draftees. We listened carefully as the instructor told us to fold the paper and tear a corner, fold again and tear another corner. This happened several times until finally we were told to open our eyes and look what we had made. Mine resembled a snowflake, another’s a hot dog and the third a toilet seat cover. The leader then explained that even though we had each heard the same instructions we interpreted them differently.

How we hear things, act upon what we’ve heard, has much to do with how our brains and spirits have been wired with education, past experiences, family, religion, and more. Too often we assume we’ve explained ourselves and assume people understand what we’re saying and expect them to do. Unless we take the time to connect on an intimate level we’ll never be heard and neither will the other.
