a Holy Discontent

“A holy discontent” is not a phrase I hear often but use frequently. Many years ago I was serving on a staff and the lead pastor was bothered by an unsettled spirit. During a meeting he shared with the staff his struggle and other associates weighed in on how to “fix” it. When my turn came to offer advice I told him not to try and “fix” anything. “There are times‘, I said, ‘when we are given a holy discontent, made uncomfortable, so that we can no longer stay where we are, and needed change can happen.”

This morning, while sitting in worship, I heard a pastor say almost the exact same thing. As a contemplative I enjoy rhythm. From seasons of the Earth to life to time each has a pulse and finding and living in it can be peaceful. However, this year has been one of constant change and adaptation. I have longed and searched for rhythm and contentment with no success. As I listened this morning a thought lingered in my spirit; “Perhaps there is something else, something deeper, which needs to be discovered before you can find peace.”
