Bearers of Light

Today, I went to jail…I didn’t hear the “CLANG!” of the iron door shut behind me but I did visit a correctional facility and speak to a sheriff and chief deputy about the importance of connecting inmates with their families and communities, teaching them skills and nurturing their talents to give them a chance to escape a horrific cycle many find themselves trapped in. We talked about bad choices, mental conditions and the myriad of factors that come together to lead a person to be incarcerated and how those who are in jail are the community’s responsibility.

Too often folks who are imprisoned, whether physically, emotionally, spiritually or all three are forgotten or blamed for their plight. They are stigmatized and ostracized. We point fingers, pity, possibly offer them a gesture of kindness and goodwill but seldom crawl down into their personal hells and give them hope of a new future.

As I sat and listened to the words and sensed the heart of the folks in the meeting I realized there are some, a courageous few, who have taken upon themselves the task of being light, bearers of grace in a very dark and hurting world.

blessings,
