Freely Given

Yesterday I had to make a quick decision. A homeless person had asked for change as I walking into a building for a meeting. I told him when I came out I would try and do something. When my appointment was over he was still sitting in the same place and so I retrieved some change from my truck and walked over to him. As I approached I noticed he already had several dollars in his hands. For a moment I considered not giving him my donation. After all, what was he going to use the money for? However, I reconsidered, handed him the coins and walked away. As I drove off I thought about some advice I heard someone give a long time ago. They said; “most homeless people aren’t one handout away from turning their life around. What you give them is usually just enough to help them get what they need to make it through the night.”

I checked my spirit to make sure my meager gift was given freely, it was, and I was at peace.

blessings,

  1. I have a friend that keeps a case of water, some fruit and usually a couple of granola bars in his truck that he hands out to homeless people at intersections, having learned that giving them money often is the equivalent of subsidizing the local liquor store. Yet, follow peace…
