How Many Faces Do You See?
How many faces can you see? This question on Facebook caught my attention as I scrolled down the feed earlier today. I found 9. My wife found 10.
As I thought about this photo, wondered about the creative mind who drew it, I also reflected on how many faces do I really see in a day? I know I look past a lot of folks, glance at others but too often I am too busy looking at my phone, going through a mental to-do list, lost in my own thoughts and don’t truly see many faces at all. I miss expressions of love, winces of pain, glassy tired eyes, yawns of exhaustion, looks of need and desperation. Every day these faces are there and I don’t see them, too wrapped up in looking at myself.
What if tomorrow we searched for faces, looking for more than skin, noses, mouths, wrinkles, beards, eyebrows and foreheads. What if instead we looked for individuals, lost souls and kindred spirits? How many would we find?
