Look How Far You’ve Come
We sat on the tailgate of my truck and he told me his life’s story. I listened, mentally checking off environmental factors that contributed to his hard life. His journey had been inexplicably difficult. No one expected him to make it this far. Yet here he was, from the depths of depravity, disease and almost certain death. Like a newborn Phoenix wanting to shake the ashes from his wings and learn to fly.
“Don’t ever,’ I told him; ‘don’t ever doubt that you can keep making the right choices, keep walking the path that leads away from who you were to who you are becoming.”
He told me he wanted to be the best father and husband in the world. I told him that together we’d help him him be the best father he could be to his kids and husband to his wife.
“Look how far you’ve come,‘ I said; ‘and you’ll see how far you can go.”
