You’re Someone

This morning I listened to a law enforcement officer tell a story that changed the course of his life.

As a young man he and a group of friends were walking home from a neighborhood basketball court when a police officer saw them and began to harass them with racial slurs. Each of them rushed home to tell someone what had happened. One by one their outrage and pain were met with similar emotions from others who heard about the event. The speaker, who witnessed the reactions from his friend’s families, expected the same. However, after telling his mom the story, she quietly responded; “If this bothers you become a policeman and do something about it.” He did and he is, everyday.

As I listened I thought of the parable of a student and his master who came upon a tree which had fallen and covered the road making it difficult for travelers to pass by. The student said; “Master, surely someone should move this tree.” The master nodded and replied; “You’re someone.”
