For Granted

A friend of mine called me yesterday needing to vent. “Their are folks who are ungrateful no matter what and how much you do! I know we don’t do nice things for the praise but sometimes the thankless attitude drives me crazy!” I realized they weren’t asking for advice and just needed a safe place to blow off some steam. I listened and as we were saying goodbye I encouraged them to let go of the frustration and be thankful for the spirit of giving and hospitality they possessed.

The world needs more people like my friend. Givers not takers, helpers not ones who ignore, sharers not hoarders, seem to be in short supply. I thought about those in my life who do so much for me and shamefully admit I, too often, take their generosity for granted.

Perhaps the greatest gift we can give the ones who help, serve, offer themselves to us is acknowledgement and heartfelt words and actions of appreciation.
